In my previous blog posts I've expressed my love for various things including Spanish tapas, street food and my greatest love of all, dessert. Therefore, this week's blog post will centre around a place which offers it all- the famous 'Mercado de San Miguel' (or the Market of San Miguel in English).
This gastronome's paradise is located in Madrid's old quarter and is one of the most popular and oldest food markets in Madrid as it dates back to the early 1900's. The market offers a wide selection of food with there being over twenty different stalls serving the likes of tapas, antipasto, paella, seafood dishes, fresh fruit, sweet pastries and even alcohol. The centre of the market acts as a dining area where everyone can sit together to enjoy their food.
With there being such a huge variety of stalls to choose from I really struggled to decide which ones to eat from but I ended up having bruschetta with mozzarella, chicken and chorizo paella (the best I've ever had- sorry Tinto x) and churros with chocolate sauce. I know my choices may seem very boring and unadventurous but with many of the stalls being seafood orientated and me not being a big fish lover (although I do love prawns and squid) I opted for the 'safer' options. However, my dad is a seafood addict and he does not stop talking about how amazing the fish tapas he had was to this day!
Although I didn't try a wide variety of stalls, I did manage to photograph almost everything and so, I'll now let the pictures speak for themselves...
If you are a food lover like me, then the Mercado de San Miguel should 100% be added to your bucket list immediately! I have truly never experienced a food market like it and it is definitely one of my favourite places I have visited. The only things I would fault the market on is that it is a little expensive and overcrowded but I suppose that's part of the market's character as it is a top tourist destination after all and the food most certainly makes up for it.
Until Friday,
B x
